Hands-On: Google Search Generative AI (Beta)
What is up, you AI Bandits?
The Good Bad Ugly is coming to you with a hands-on with Google Search’s new AI features currently in beta form.
Now, if you didn’t know, Google Search’s Generative AI is like if Chat GPT and Google Search got together and had an AI baby. It brings more of a predictive and conversational experience to how you typically use Google search.
In this hands-on, I’ll give you impressions of our experience using this new AI feature by looking at its ease of use, the user interface, and the quality of its AI output.
Now, let’s boot up!
As mentioned before, this AI feature is still in beta, so the quality of results may be less than 100% accurate.
To get started, you type in your search terms just like any Google search, and with the results, the AI magic starts to happen as it processes your query within a few seconds.
From here, the AI results are displayed above the standard search results. You’ll notice how the AI results are separated by a different color background, and I’m using Google Search in Dark mode in case you’re wondering.
What’s really nice is how the results are contextualized like a conversation. It even offers suggestive prompts to deepen your search results. As with any AI, it will be continually learning from interactions, so it’s nice that you can rate the quality of your results with a thumbs up or thumbs down.
In addition to the suggestive prompts, you have an open field to chat with the search engine to further your search. It’s a great feature since the AI remembers the context of your search. Now, you can see how using the AI becomes more like a conversation similar to what you would expect from ChatGpt. I’m dubbing this “conversational search.” You heard it here first!
The search results also displayed these carrot buttons next to a few descriptions. Pressing these reveals a link to the source of the descriptions.
Like in any chat experience, your search results are kept in a chat history that you can quickly scroll through to return to a prior conversation. This is convenient.
Overall, I found the whole experience simple and quick. The quality of the search results was on par with what I found using the traditional Google Search.
The real benefit of using these new AI features was how contextualized the results became no matter how deep you went with your search conversation and how summarized information is shown to you in the results before having to click out to a website.
I believe that this AI feature will encourage more information-seeking with its suggestive chat prompts and open field for chatting and recommend you start using this to redefine how you Google Search once it goes live from beta.
